PRP Hair

Who can get PRP treatment for hair restoration?

Any person suffering hair loss from alopecia areata or male or female pattern baldness is a candidate for treatment.Alopecia areata (also known as spot baldness) is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Androgenic alopecia (known as male or female pattern hair loss) is the most common cause of hair loss and by the age of 50 affects half of males and a quarter of females. The sooner the hair loss is treated the more hair follicles that can be saved to prevent permanent baldness. PRP will not work in areas where there are no active hair follicles.  Thin and wispy hair where the hair follicles are still active will respond the best to PRP treatment.

What are the benefits of PRP treatment for hair restoration?

Improvement in hair growth can typically be expected approximately three months after PRP treatment. Our treatment protocol can provide significant stimulation of hair regrowth and hair follicle rejuvenation. Hair regrowth can help to improve self-esteem and confidence.

How does it work?

This is an in-office procedure which can be done during a person’s lunch hour. A small sample of blood (2-4 tablespoons) is obtained from the patient’s arm (just like getting blood drawn). This blood sample is processed in an FDA-approved device to separate the platelets and plasma from other components like red blood cells. These concentrated platelets contain powerful growth factors and stem cells which have profound biological effects on hair follicles and skin. Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful combination of growth factors, cytokines, and other proteins is painlessly injected into the area of the scalp where weak hair follicles exist. Micro-needling of the skin immediately following the injection is used to activate the platelets. This comfortable clinic procedure takes less than an hour to perform and patients may resume all activities, including workouts, shampooing, etc. immediately after the procedure. Mild soreness and redness of the scalp typically lasts less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.

How can I tell if the treatment is working?

As with any hair regrowth treatment, results can be subtle. Hair growth is measured at 3-month intervals to track progress.

Will the treatment need to be repeated?

Unfortunately, the hair follicle-stimulating results of PRP treatment for hair growth is not permanent. Most patients that undergo PRP require repeat treatment in approximately 12-24 months. It takes 6-12 months to see observable results in the mirror or in photos.
